How Sleep Changes as Kids Grow: A Timeline for Parents

Sleep in childhood is not one-size-fits-all. It changes with age, development and even personality. As your child grows, their brain and body evolve, and so do their sleep needs. Understanding these changes can help parents create healthy habits, choose the right bedtime routines and spot when something might be off.

Newborn to 3 months:
In these early months, babies sleep a lot but not for long stretches. Expect 14 to 17 hours a day, often broken into small naps around the clock. Their internal clock is still developing, so day and night can feel the same to them.

4 to 12 months:
Sleep starts to settle into more predictable patterns. Babies need around 12 to 16 hours of sleep including naps. Night sleep stretches get longer and many babies start sleeping through by this stage. A consistent bedtime routine becomes key.

1 to 3 years:
Toddlers need about 11 to 14 hours of sleep each day. This usually includes one day nap and a longer overnight sleep. Bedtime battles may begin as toddlers become more independent but staying firm with routines and calming spaces helps.

4 to 6 years:
Sleep needs drop slightly to around 10 to 13 hours a day. Most children stop napping by five. This is a great time to make sure their bed setup supports healthy sleep. The Eco Kids mattress is ideal for this age with its allergy-friendly materials and strong spine support that helps growing bodies rest deeply.

7 to 12 years:
Kids this age still need 9 to 12 hours of sleep but homework, sport and screen time can interfere. Make sure they get enough rest by encouraging a consistent bedtime and keeping electronics out of the bedroom. A comfy bed that supports sleep quality is more important than ever.

Teen years:
Teens need about 8 to 10 hours but their natural body clock shifts, making them want to sleep later. While school times may not match their ideal rhythm, a relaxing sleep space and good mattress can help improve rest. Even teens benefit from a non-toxic supportive mattress like Eco Kids, especially when growth spurts are in full swing.

As your child grows, their sleep evolves. But one thing stays the same, the need for a sleep space that is comfortable, healthy and supportive. From toddlerhood through to the teenage years, a good mattress can make all the difference.
